State of GEO 2026: The AI Visibility Benchmark Report

Executive Summary

The AI visibility gap is widening. In our analysis of 2,847 business entities across four major AI platforms, the top 10% of businesses achieved an average AI Readiness Score of 84/100 — while the bottom 50% scored below 38/100. That gap, which was 31 points in our 2024 analysis, has grown to 46 points in 2026.

The businesses winning in AI-era discovery share a common profile: strong entity clarity, 8+ authoritative citations, complete schema markup, and consistent topical authority content published at least monthly. The businesses losing ground often have excellent traditional SEO — but minimal investment in the signals that AI models actually use.

Key Takeaway

The median business in our sample is cited by ChatGPT in only 3 out of 10 relevant category queries. For Perplexity — the most transparent AI platform — that number drops to 2 out of 10. The opportunity for optimization-focused businesses is enormous.

Key Findings

01

Citation quality outperforms citation quantity by 3.4x

Businesses with 5+ Tier 1-2 citations scored an average of 71/100 on Entity Clarity. Businesses with 20+ Tier 3-4 citations averaged only 39/100. The source matters far more than the number.

02

Schema markup has a 67% correlation with AI Readiness Score

Businesses with complete Organization + FAQ schema scored an average of 28 points higher than those with no schema. This is the highest single-action improvement available.

03

Wikidata presence alone improves Gemini visibility by 41%

Businesses with a Wikidata entity were 41% more likely to be accurately cited by Gemini compared to identical businesses without Wikidata presence.

04

AI visibility and traditional SEO are only moderately correlated (r=0.52)

Strong traditional SEO does not guarantee AI visibility. 23% of businesses in our top SEO quartile scored below 40/100 for AI readiness — demonstrating that GEO requires distinct optimization efforts.

05

Interpretation Drift affects 61% of businesses analyzed

More than 6 in 10 businesses have measurable inconsistency in how AI platforms describe them. The average business is described differently by ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini in 4 out of 8 key attributes.

06

B2B companies are systematically under-optimized vs B2C

B2B businesses average 31/100 AI Readiness vs 44/100 for B2C — despite B2B buyers being more likely to use AI for research. This represents the largest untapped opportunity in the GEO landscape.
